PROJECT SYNOPSIS - The New Genesis

Out of all the university modules I undertook, I believe my final master project titled The New Genesis got the best response, both from the tutors and industry specialists. Influenced by celebrity culture and social media, working within the genre of fashion photography, I explored the crossover between religion and consumerism. Influenced by celebrity culture, fashion and social media, society’s constantly consuming fashion and beauty goods to feel socially validated. With the movement of consumerism constantly growing, we now worship and follow the consumerism movement as if it were a religion. Exploring the crossover between religion and consumerism, my project interprets consumerism as a religion whilst questioning whether the act of chasing social validation brings true happiness and inner peace to ourselves.

I believe this projects success was down to the combination of my narrative and the creative visual execution of my project. Playing with symbolism, lighting, colour theory and making subtle references to religion and consumerism, the project quickly became a talking point when showcasing my portfolio to industry specialists and when applying for jobs within the photographic industry. Showing both a conceptual but technical and methodical approach to the project, both my tutors, potential employers and industry specialists were very intrigued by my narrative and quick to pick up on my photographic technical skills and organization. In comparison to other projects, I’ve done throughout my time at university, I believe this project is by far my most successful due to the very positive, widespread response from both the university’s lecturers and industry specialists. It was this university that’s single headedly landed me job interviews, freelance work and my first job within the photographic industry.
