ARTIST STATEMENT

Disciplined in the practice of portrait photography, Claire creates narratives connected to social issues, such as the invisibility of women, and issues she considers aren’t highlighted in today’s society thus enabling her to work with an eclectic mix of individuals connected by a common theme.

The images displayed are from three projects Claire has produced in which she explores the changing roles of women in society, particularly in relation to aging; professions in which women have been traditionally been under-represented; and sexuality. ‘Vanishing Women: 50 portraits of 50 women over 50’, endorsed by author Cecelia Ahern, explores the increasing invisibility of women within society as they age. ‘Breaking the Stained Glass Ceiling’ celebrates the increasing role of women in church leadership, and ‘Inamorata – the woman with whom I am in love’ portrays and recognises older gay women who can now have their committed same sex relationships legally recognised.

In addition Claire exhibited work in the Multiple Realities Exhibition at the new Birmingham Library which captured the lives of multiples.

While completing a Post Graduate Cert in Therapeutic Photography at Robert Gordon University Aberdeen, Claire is currently teaching in a specialist provision school combining the teaching of photography and social skills.
